Why war is not a destiny – Harald Meller, Kai Michel and Carel van Schaik on the evolution of violence
The unthinkable has occurred. War is back – and a threat to all of us. Was the long period of peace in Europe nothing but a brief intermezzo? Is fate coming to get us because we cannot overcome our belligerent nature? It is high time to go back to the evolutionary roots of violence. Archaeologist Harald Meller, historian and literary scientist Kai Michel and evolutionary biologist Carel van Schaik take us through a different kind of human history. Their book The Evolution of Violence presents findings on bonobos, traces the archeology of murder and manslaughter and shows how war has made not only made despots and states great, but also gods. They bring together insights from various sciences to show the conditions under which war and violence come into being – and how we can prevent it happening in the future. Host: Gert Scobel
