About Carel van Schaik
Carel van Schaik, born in 1953 in Rotterdam, is a behavioral researcher and evolutionary biologist. He examines the roots of human culture, cooperation and intelligence in primates and spent many years observing orangutans in the Indonesian jungle. He was a professor at Duke University in the USA and professor of biological anthropology at the University of Zurich, where he was director of the Anthropological Institute and Museum. Carel van Schaik is a corresponding member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and a fellow of the Max Planck Society. He lives in Zurich. Together with Kai Michel, he wrote the bestsellers “Tagebuch der Menschheit” [“Diary of Humanity”] (2016), “The Truth About Eva” (2020) and “Mensch sein” [“Being Human”] (2022).
