Beauty and power – Mirna Funk and Elisabeth Lechner on body image and female autonomy
With German Sign Language and Easy Language interpretation
All bodies, women’s in particular, are constantly subject to evaluation mechanisms. But who decides what is considered beautiful? Should you jump into self-optimization and beauty mania, or is it better not to? It is clear that women are judged and condemned either way, whether they decide to go for a beauty procedure or to leave the house without make-up from now on. Journalist Mirna Funk (“Who Cares! Von der Freiheit, Frau zu sein” [“Who Cares? On the Freedom of Being a Woman”] and most recently “Balagan”) embodies self-determined feminism and stands for images of women and bodies that are influenced by her Jewish and East German origins.
Cultural scientist Elisabeth Lechner (“Riot, Don’t Diet!”) conducts research into body positivity, capitalist beauty ideals and “disgusting” bodies. At phil.COLOGNE, they discuss unruliness and femininity, beauty standards and self-determination. Host: Rabea Weihser
