Mattering to others – Maike Luhmann and Michael Zichy on loneliness and life’s meaning
With German Sign Language and Easy Language interpretation
It is described as an epidemic and the “new social issue of our times” (Hendrik Wüst): loneliness. It is increasingly seen as one of the greatest challenges facing our society, on both a personal as well as political level.
Psychologist Maike Luhmann, one of Germany’s best-known loneliness researchers, has taken stock of the latest research in her book Loneliness - Why It Concerns Us All. She investigates when loneliness becomes dangerous, what role our modern lifestyles play and what a society must look like if it wants to effectively tackle loneliness. Philosopher Michael Zichy approaches the topic from the other side. Mattering to Others: A Philosophy of the Meaning of Life, a book which is both comprehensive and accessible, answers the question about the meaning of life. In his view, loneliness appears as a lack of recognition, belonging and mattering. Host: Jürgen Wiebicke
