Dangerous ideas – Armin Pfahl-Traughber and Andreas Rödder on the “classics” of the New Right and the limits of conservatism
Carl Schmitt, Ernst Jünger, Oswald Spengler – names from the past that are coming up again. The anti-democratic thinking of the Conservative Revolution in the Weimar Republic is experiencing an ominous renaissance. Who were these influential thinkers and why do they still fascinate the New Right today? In his book Politische ›Klassiker‹ der Neuen Rechten. Antidemokratische Denker aus der Weimarer Republik [“Political “Classics” of the New Right: Anti-Democratic Thinkers of the Weimar Republic”], extremism researcher Armin Pfahl-Traughber traces the lines of tradition that extend into the present. Historian Andreas Rödder (“Der verlorene Frieden” [“Lost Peace”]), founder of the liberal-conservative think tank, Republik21, asks where the line is between legitimate conservatism and intellectual right-wing extremism. And he questions the effectiveness of Germany’s “firewall” – the pact between mainstream parties to not cooperate with the far-right – as a political response. A conversation about dangerous ideas, their return – and what differentiates conservatives and right-wing extremists today. Host: Jürgen Wiebicke
