The War in the Head: Meditating with Bataille. With Knut Ebeling
with Gert Scobel Knut Ebeling
One rainy September day, philosopher Knut Ebeling embarks on a Vipassana meditation. He wants to find peace, stop the flow of thoughts and overcome depression. It is not his first meditation and, like the others, it is characterized by silence, breathing exercises and asceticism. But soon, he starts taking notes. In doing so, he superimposes his experience on that of another and embarks on an adventure of thinking: Some 90 years before him, Georges Bataille also meditated, wanting to contribute to the de-centering of Western philosophy. And that is how the philosopher and scandalous author made it through the years of the Second World War. In The War in the Head: Meditating with Bataille, Ebeling reveals an intimate view of another Bataille, which leads right into the crises of the contemporary self and our time: Is it possible to meditate through a war?
