The Great War – The First World War as the “last days of mankind”. With Herfried Münkler and Kai Hinrich Müller
Tickets are valid for both events with Herfried Münkler.
On June 27, Cologne Opera will present the debut performance of the grand opera, “The Last Days of Mankind” by Philippe Manoury, adapted from Karl Kraus’ play. In this megalomaniac drama, Kraus tells the story of the First World War, into which the human race plunges and in which it loses its humanity. On the eve of the premiere, Herfried Münkler, author of the sweeping monograph “The Great War”, is a guest at Cologne’s Staatenhaus. He talks to musicologist Kai Hinrich Müller about the social context, conditions and developments of this war, which shook the world like none before it and was waged at all levels. How does the political scientist see Karl Kraus’ historical record and what can it teach us, in light of the current wars, about our democracy today?
