In her new book Marble, Mercury, Mist, Judith Schalansky embarks on a journey through the material conditions of our world. Starting with a marble block weighing nearly 17 tons – which has captivated her since a ferry ride off the coast of Thassos – she follows the stone’s trail through a marble quarry and a sculptor’s studio, into the dark, often violent history of resource extraction and appropriation of the world. In Schalansky’s typical style, the book covers all manner of things: the nutritional value of marble pigs, the weight of the Earth, the layout of Noah’s Ark, the authenticity of Mexican wrestling and spectral illusions created in mountain mist. In other words: phenomena that reflect and refract the eeriness and unruliness of reality. With playful precision, she turns her gaze to what the world is made of – and, ultimately, to her own writing. Host: Wolfgang M. Schmitt
