Never before have there been so many investigations into mere words, whether the topic is migration, climate policy, Ukraine, or the Middle East conflict. Today, the state defines numerous political statements as criminal offenses that, just ten years ago, clearly fell under the umbrella of free speech.
In his new book "Meinungsfreiheit", Ronen Steinke highlights where the boundaries of freedom of expression now lie. Instead of leaving it to the courts to decide on the criminality of statements, he advocates for greater transparency and calls for more debates to be allowed within civil society, as long as they remain nonviolent. On stage, he will be joined by cultural studies scholar and author Mithu Sanyal (forthcoming: “No. Against the Militarization of the Present”) and will discuss the state of our culture of debate with her—from both legal and societal perspectives. Moderator: Ferdos Forudastan
