Do we need a firewall? Rolf Mützenich and Frauke Rostalski on political boundaries and spaces for societal discourse
How much participation should and may be allowed in a free society? What spaces for discourse do we want to open up in our democracy? It is clear that we need to talk. But how and with whom? Rolf Mützenich has represented the Social Democrats in the German parliament for over 22 years. He spoke out forcefully against working with the far-right AfD party, warning that breaching the “firewall” (the consensus in Germany that political parties in the center must never cooperate with the extreme right) would be like opening the “gates to hell”. Frauke Rostalski is a legal specialist and author and comments shrewdly on current societal debates. Her book, “The Vulnerable Society. The New Vulnerability as a Challenge to Freedom”, was published recently. She sees excluding the AfD and its voters from public debates as a threat to democratic polity. A conversation about political responsibility, boundaries and willingness to engage in dialog. Host: Jürgen Wiebicke
