Let’s create peace – but how? There is barely any question so urgent yet so controversial. When does the way out of a war even begin? And how can it be successful: with or without weapons, through negotiation or when one of the sides wins? At which point do you know whether peace is going to hold or if it’s simply a tactical pause? History does not repeat itself or provide a blueprint for solving today’s problems. But it offers an infinite reservoir of specific conflicts and constellations. It allows us to see more clearly and to recognize what is happening. In his book, Wars and How to End Them, Leibniz Prize winner Jörn Leonhard looks back at past wars, which all came to an end eventually, and turns historical knowledge into a fruitful means of understanding our present day.
