“Barbarism always begins with the abolition of human rights” – An evening for Thomas Mann, with Mely Kiyak, Maria Schrader and Daniel Schreiber
Nobel laureate for literature Thomas Mann fled to America to escape the Nazis. From there, he broadcast monthly speeches to German listeners via the BBC. Desperate, admonitory, angry, he tried to say just one thing to the Germans during the war: “Do not participate!” His speeches were notable not only for his commitment, because he actually abhorred political interventions, but also for the degree to which his language and writing were changed by the circumstances. War, displacement and exile impinge greatly on the work of every artist, requiring them to decide whether to interfere or remain at a distance. For Thomas Mann it was very clear: He had no choice but to resist. Mely Kiyak has published a new edition of Thomas Mann’s Listen, Germany! with a foreword and afterword. She comments on selected speeches, read by Maria Schrader. Host: Daniel Schreiber
