When does a protest become a criminal act? And what happens to a democracy that takes its most engaged voices to court? Early one morning, a special police unit storms a young activist’s apartment, citing Section 129 of the German Criminal Code. She is accused of having created a criminal organization – meaning in this case the climate movement “Last Generation”. Carla Hinrichs, former spokesperson for the movement, processes these experiences in her book, My Wounded Generation.
Its focus is a generation that feels let down – and not just in terms of the climate crisis. It is about basic rights, state power and the question of how far a democracy is allowed to go to control dissent. What does it mean when a law to combat terrorism and organized crime is used against civil disobedience? Where is the line between the rule of law and repression? Host: Özge İnan
