The future of the humanities after their demise. With Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht
What do the humanities achieve – and what have they failed to do? Hardly anyone can answer this question as pointedly as Hans Ulrich “Sepp” Gumbrecht, one of the most prolific contemporary humanities scholars. In his memoir, Sepp. My Life from Half Distance, the literary theorist, Professor Emeritus at Stanford and keen observer of the present day, looks back at half a century of international living and thinking: from bombed-out Würzburg via the famous Lycée Henri IV in Paris to Silicon Valley, from Michel Foucault to a brief exchange with Neymar. This rich intellectual life is also a story of the humanities – what they can achieve, their place in schools and universities and their significance for the future. What can humanities still tell the world? Do we need them more urgently than ever? Host: Cai Werntgen
