The Kremlin vs. Carnival – how far can satire go? With Jürgen Becker and Jacques Tilly
Jacques Tilly, the renowned float builder for the Düsseldorf Carnival, and cabaret artist Jürgen Becker are two voices that have been pushing the boundaries of satire for years. Tilly’s work has recently sparked particular controversy: Because of his critical carnival floats, he was sentenced in absentia by a Russian court to several years in prison – a drastic example of the conflict between artistic freedom and authoritarian power. Between aggravation and responsibility, the two discuss humor as a weapon, an outlet and a tool for creating awareness – and talk about the anarchic power of Carnival. How far can provocation go? Where does offense begin? Who decides? An evening full of incisive insights into the role of satire in polarized times. Host: Sarah Brasack
