Phil.cologne opening event: Israel. A conversation with Navid Kermani and Natan Sznaider
On 7 October 2023, Israeli sociologist Natan Sznaider woke up in another world. "Horrified" and "despairing" were inadequate words to describe the massacre perpetrated by Hamas. The Cologne-based writer Navid Kermani, winner of the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade, witnessed at a distance the horror that had already befallen so many peoples in the Middle East over the past two decades.
The two friends recalled a passionate email exchange they had in 2002 after their first meeting in Haifa. 21 years later, their correspondence, published under the title Israel. eine Korrespondenz, now available in book form, is a vital aid to understanding the present in the Middle East. They will continue their dialogue on the phil.COLOGNE stage, discussing war and peace in a conflict-riven region.
