About Robert Menasse

Austrian writer Robert Menasse was born in Vienna in 1954. He studied German literature, philosophy and political science in Vienna, Salzburg and Messina and obtained his doctorate in 1980 with a thesis on the figure of the outsider in literature. He then worked as a university lecturer in Austrian literature and subsequently as a guest lecturer at the Institute for Literary Theory at the University of São Paulo. Since his return to Vienna in 1988, he has been working as a freelance author and translator from Brazilian Portuguese. His published works include Expulsion from Hell and the political pamphlet Der Europäische Landbote: die Wut der Bürger und der Friede Europas. Menasse has won numerous prizes and honors, including the Österreichische Kunstpreis für Literatur, the Heinrich Mann Prize and most recently the European Book Prize.
