Tomorrow’s world Visions for a new Europe with Robert Menasse
Has the European idea outlived itself? Democratic deficits and manifold crises threaten the European project. In many member states, political actors who no longer (want to) know anything about the experiences of the founders are fuelling a new nationalism. Today, Europe is at a crossroads: either the historically unique vision of building a post-national Europe succeeds, or the prospect of a resurgence of the nation states looms. That would be another defeat for rationality
– with all the dangers and consequences that we should be all too familiar with from history.
Four days after the European elections, we talk to Robert Menasse about his visions for a post-national and cosmopolitan Europe. In his new essay Die Welt von morgen, he passionately advocates the European project and provides a critical defence.
