The pandemic imposed distance, mask and information obligations on all of us. It showed us that we cannot meet our responsibilities to one another without assuming obligations. The German Bundestag was unable to enact a vaccine mandate. This body is as uncertain as the society it represents. How reasonable can we expect people in general to be? When does reason demand that obligations be imposed on them? Do we need to strengthen citizens’ mindfulness of their duties, do we need to institute a mandatory year of service to hold our society together? Or do we instead need to champion freedom for the sake of democracy, which right now is acutely threatened by authoritarianism?
Bernhard Schlink is a jurist and author; his most recent work is entitled “Die Enkelin”.
