Prof. Dr. Dieter Thomä, born 1959 in Heidelberg, is professor of philosophy at the University of St. Gallen. After an internship at the Henri Nannen School of Journalism, he initially worked as an editor at radio broadcaster Sender Freies Berlin. He earned his doctorate at the University of Freiburg in 1989 with his dissertation "Zur Kritik der Textgeschichte Martin Heideggers 1910-1976”. Thomä taught philosophy at the Universities of Paderborn, Rostock, New York (New School for Social Research), Berlin (FU) and Essen. His main focus is on social and cultural philosophy, ethics, political philosophy and the discourse on the Socratic question of “how to live”.
