About Reinhard Merkel

Prof. Dr. Reinhard Merkel is professor emeritus for criminal law and philosophy of law at the University of Hamburg. He competed as a swimmer in the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City. He studied law in Bochum, Heidelberg and Munich and taught at the Universities of Bielefeld, Rostock and Hamburg. Merkel was elected to the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in 2011 and served on the German Ethics Council from 2012 to 2016. His publications include the monograph “Willensfreiheit und rechtliche Schuld” (2008).
