About Gregor Gysi

Gregor Gysi was born in 1948 and is a German lawyer and politician. He is the son of Klaus Gysi, a Minister of Culture in the German Democratic Republic, and the nephew of the literature Nobel Prize winner Doris Lessing. He joined East Germany’s Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) in 1967. As a lawyer, he represented Robert Havemann, Rudolf Bahro and other dissidents. From 1989 until 1993, Gysi was leader of the Party of Democratic Socialism (PDS), from 1990-2002 and 2005-2016 he was a member of the German parliament and chairman of the Left Party parliamentary group. Since December 2016 he has been President of the Party of the European Left. His books include Wie weiter? [“How to Continue?”] (2013) and Ausstieg Links? [“Exit Left?”] (2015)
